DEHYDRATION OR MALNUTRITION

Dehydration and malnutrition injuries suffered as a result of nursing home neglect can cause serious medical complications or may lead to death.  Malnutrition occurs when the human body is deprived of necessary vitamins and minerals by not getting enough to eat.  Dehydration occurs when a person is deprived of necessary fluids.

Senior citizens are at an increased risk of dehydration and malnutrition because they are often unable to monitor their own intake of food and water.  As a result, elderly nursing home residents depend on staff to ensure proper nutrition and hydration.

Burke, Harvey & Frankowski’s lawyers investigate and evaluate nursing home dehydration and malnutrition cases across the South, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.  If a loved one suffered a catastrophic injury or death as a result of the nursing home’s failure to hydrate or nourish a resident, money damages may be available.  There are no fees or expenses unless a recovery is obtained.

CAUSES OF DEHYDRATION AND MALNUTRITION

The most common  nursing home injuries are associated with dehydration or malnutrition as a result of the nursing home’s negligence, or the negligence of its staff, or both.  Dehydration or malnutrition can be caused by:

  • failing to maintain sufficient food and fluids;
  • failing to maintain adequate nursing home staff to feed residents and monitor the food and fluid they consume;
  • failure of nursing home staff to make accurate notations in resident’s records regarding what they eat and drink;
  • failure to accurately assess the residents dietary needs as part of the plan of care, or failure to follow the established plan; and
  • failure of nursing home supervisors to educate staff about the nutritional needs of residents.
